Contest Information
OBJECTIVE
The McMaster University Chem E Car team offers an environment where innovation meets chemical engineering excellence. Our primary objective in participating in the Chem-E-Car competition is to design and build a chemically powered vehicle capable of reaching a predetermined distance from the starting point, all while transporting a specified amount of water weight. Success is measured not only by the accuracy of the car's placement but also by the excellence of its propulsion system, design, and uniqueness.
COMPETITION CONSTRAINTS
Our ingenuity is put to the test within defined constraints:
-
Size Limitations: The car must be able to be disassembled to fit into a standard shoebox, measuring 40cm x 30cm x 18cm.
-
Payload Challenge: Carrying a payload of 0-500mL of water, the vehicle must navigate from the starting line to the finish line with precision.
-
Chemical Energy: The energy to power the car must be generated through a chemical reaction.
-
Timed Stoppage: The car must come to a stop precisely two minutes after initiation; failure to do so results in disqualification.
-
Last-Minute Challenge: Distance and payload information is disclosed just one hour before the competition, adding an element of real-time problem-solving to the mix.
SAFETY
Safety is our top priority. Adherence to safety requirements outlined by the AIChE is non-negotiable. Our commitment includes:
-
Pressure Tested Designs: All pressure chambers are rigorously tested to ensure safety.
-
Chemical Responsibility: Restricted chemicals are strictly prohibited.
-
Fire Hazard Mitigation: Stringent measures are in place to prevent and address fire hazards.
COMPETITION RULES
Specific rules govern our braking mechanism to ensure fair play:
-
Component Integrity: The braking mechanism cannot interfere with any moving components, safeguarding the integrity of the vehicle's design.
-
Timing Limitations: Activation of the braking mechanism cannot be linked to a timing device, eliminating external influences.
For a comprehensive overview of the rules, please refer to the official AIChE guidelines here.
DOCUMENTATION
Our commitment to excellence extends to documentation:
-
EDP and JSA Reports: Thorough documentation of lab work, chemicals used, the propulsion system, and safety considerations is mandatory.
